Gadjah Mada University is always committed to supporting the development of creativity and innovation based on synergy with the concept of cooperation between University-Industry-Government-Society or University-Industry-Government-Community (UIGC). Apart from building a Field Research Center (FRC) in Kulon Progo as a meeting place for innovation and society, UGM has also established a Fabrication Laboratory (Fab Lab) at FRC which is an open innovation ecosystem with the slogan "Making (Almost) Anything". FabLab Jogja (UGM) has designed strategic steps that focus on the follow-up to the 2022 Ideathon, namely accelerating and expanding collaboration, revitalizing activities through increasing the university's Key Performance Indicators (IKU) achievements, and strengthening national and international networks. One of the strategic activities designed is FabCamp Challenge 2023, which is a training, collaboration and skills development activity, especially in the field of technology, as an effort to accelerate technological growth based on problems in Kulon Progo.


The 2023 Fab Camp Challenge held by FabLab Jogja UGM has entered an onsite session at the Field Research Center at the UGM Kulon Progo Vocational School from 17 to 21 September 2023, after previously starting with remote-asynchronous activities since Pre-Departure, 6 September. Carrying the slogan "Making (almost) Anything", FabLab Jogja UGM is holding the 2023 FabCamp Challenge as a follow-up to the 2022 Ideathon in the context of accelerating and expanding collaboration, revitalizing activities through increasing the University's Key Performance Indicators (IKU) achievements, and strengthening national and international networks. This activity also further strengthens the commitment of the UGM FabLab and the SV UGM Field Research Center as a vehicle for sharpening creation, learning, training and innovation with the community to improve prosperity and open innovation, especially in Kulon Progo.


The event began with an Opening Remark by Prof. Dr. Ir. Adi Djoko Guritno, MSIE., as head of FabLab Jogja. Then continued with an Introduction to the mission by the Chair of the 2023 FabCamp Challenge Committee, namely Dr. Eng. Agustinus Winarno, S.T., M.Eng. Next, in the Opening of Challenge Topic session, Dr. Setyawan Bekti Wibowo, S.T., M.Eng., conveyed 3 topics that were "challenges" in the 2023 FabCamp Challenge. After that, the committee provided information related to the technical implementation of the 2023 FabCamp Challenge, starting from group division, to camping ground locations. This event ended with a closing and team break out room and group discussion. The next agenda is Technical Pre-Departure which will be held on September 12 2023.


In the year 2023, Yogyakarta witnessed an event brimming with innovation and inspiration—the FabCamp Challenge 2023. This event served as a platform for creative minds and technology enthusiasts to converge, collaborate, and explore their brilliant ideas.

The event not only attracted participants from the student and professional realms in the technology sector but also featured renowned speakers from the global technology industry.

Rico Kanthatham was one of the speakers at the FabCamp Challenge 2023 activity which was held in Kulon Progo Yogyakarta, organized by FabLab Jogakrta in collaboration with Gadjah Mada University. Rico Kanthatham is an activist at Skylab Workshop (Kamakura). Skylabworkshop believes in giving curious, intelligent, and creative children the space and tools to explore their own ideas and take control of their learning Alone. The uniqueness of FabCamp Challenge lies not only in its competitive aspect but also in its collaborative atmosphere. Participants were encouraged to share their knowledge, experiences, and ideas with each other, creating a strong and supportive professional network. The event served as a platform for participants to bridge the gap between theory and practice, broaden their insights, and deepen their understanding of the latest technological developments.

Throughout the FabCamp Challenge, participants engaged in a series of workshops, seminars, and collaborative sessions. Attendees had the option to focus on various topics such as software development, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), and other cutting-edge technologies. Additionally, they had the opportunity to gain practical experience through hands-on labs guided by industry experts.

Apart from technical activities, FabCamp Challenge 2023 also hosted an innovation competition challenging participants to create technological solutions addressing real-world problems. With the support of mentors and distinguished judges, participants competed to generate the most innovative ideas with the potential to change the world.
